Is Zazzle a Passive Income?

In July I wrote a post calling to KILL the rumor that Zazzle is a passive income

And I am just wondering Podsters, 6 months down the line, how do you feel about that statement now?

I think it's way overdue for some course providers who tout their early Zazzle success with just a few hours of effort to update their videos based on current realities. Even if they don't want to re-record whole videos, they should insert a section or overlay explaining that the market is more flooded and challenging now for newcomers. I appreciate your approach, Leah, of helping people find niches and lean into research to address SEO challenges and crowded marketplaces.

Thank you and I of course agree with you. The ironic thing about those specific courses is they spent years building their inventory and making next to no sales. So that entire period should be taken into account in regards to ' passive earnings'. Ie the passive income merely covers all those months and years of working for almost nothing.

In todays climate, as you note the only way to gain fast sales with a small inventory is to go niche BUT that requires work ahead of that process to find a profitable niche. It is doable and for me the only thing that makes sense if you want to avoid all the other hoops and take consuming leaps required…

I am late to this party but wanted to add my 2 cents. There is no such animal as "passive income" anywhere... Online income works only if you work it. Selling wall art is really hard work. The beauty of Z and other POD sites with merchandise is that is it much easier to sell art if it is on cool products that people need and can use in their everyday life.

It's even less passive than when you wrote that blog post. In addition to all the things needed to stay competitive (which applies to all PODs) there are new tasks Zazzle has added which are unique to Zazzle. First cover photos, then collections which needed cover photos of their own and those collections had required products which you probably hadn't already made. Since you made that blog post they added videos.

All of those things are unique to Zazzle and anybody who slept on those is now behind. It's Zazzle staying competitive against the other PODs which is absolutely necessary. But it shows how non-passive this whole thing is.

Yep, this is why I posted this query! It's becoming even more ridiculous that those ads about 'making passive income on Zazzle' still persist. I think many of lost a lot of sleep when all these changes came out trying to keep up. I gave up trying, but that's because I am 90% retired from Zazzle. Had I not been, I'd still be driving myself nuts working 19hrs a day trying to roll with the changes.

It's definitely not passive income. I have worked my butt off for less and less income even after I spent money I didn't have for the class by a so called Zazzle diamond seller that was supposed to teach me how to make my store a success. I used to want to make it to Silver level but it seems pointless these days because all of our best sellers are getting buried in the searches as our income declines.

Pro levels have no benefits now. I was 'advised' they're no longer relevant and need updating when I enquired as to what my 'perks were' as per the stated benefits.
